Moving a −80 °C freezer without losing samples

How to move a −80 °C ultra-low freezer: plan the samples, use dry ice, transport upright, wait before switching on and verify temperature after the move.

In short

Move the samples separately (backup freezer, dry ice or portable freezer), move the freezer empty and upright, wait before switching it on per the manufacturer, and return samples only once it is stable at −80 °C.

Before

  • Check whether a backup freezer is available at the new site.
  • Order enough dry ice for the whole move plus a margin.
  • Record what is on each shelf so you can restock quickly.

Why upright matters

The compressor contains oil. If the freezer is laid down, oil can flow into the lines and damage the compressor at start-up. Keep it upright from the moment it moves until it is placed, then wait before switching on.

After

  • Switch on and let it reach −80 °C and stabilise.
  • Restock samples and confirm temperature alarms work.
