In short
To move a fume hood safely, empty and clean it, have a contractor disconnect exhaust, gas and power, measure the entire route, separate the hood from its base and move it upright. After placement, reconnect and test airflow.
Prepare
- Remove all chemicals and glassware.
- Clean the work surface and interior, and document that it is clean.
- Have the HVAC contractor disconnect the exhaust duct and qualified trades disconnect gas, water and power.
Measure the route
A fume hood is long, heavy and top-heavy. Measure doors, corridors, turns and the elevator, and check the elevator load rating. If it will not fit, plan a crane lift through a window or balcony before moving day.
Move and reinstall
- Separate the hood from the base cabinet.
- Secure the sliding sash and protect the front.
- Transport upright with full tie-down.
- Reinstall, level, reconnect exhaust and test face velocity.
