Biosafety cabinets after a move: why recertification is needed

Why a biosafety cabinet (BSC) needs recertification after it is moved, what is tested, and how to schedule the certifier so the lab isn't delayed.

In short

Moving a biosafety cabinet can disturb HEPA filter seals and airflow, so common standards require recertification before use. Book the certifier for the days after placement and keep the cabinet out of use until then.

Why it is required

A BSC protects the worker, the sample and the environment with precise airflow and HEPA filters. Vibration during transport can shift a filter or break a seal without any visible sign, so it is tested after every move.

What is usually tested

  • HEPA filter integrity.
  • Airflow velocity and direction.
  • Alarms and fan operation.
  • Exhaust connection, if any.

Avoid delays

  • Book the certifier when you set the moving date.
  • Place and connect the cabinet before the certifier arrives.
  • If you have several cabinets, move them in phases.
