Relocating a hospital lab without interrupting service

How to move a clinical lab in a hospital in phases: backup from another lab, night moves, IT coordination and checks before returning to service.

In short

A clinical lab moves in phases: non-critical equipment first, then analysers in pairs so one is always running, and critical instruments at night or at the weekend. A backup lab, IT connections and quality checks are arranged in advance.

Why you cannot close for a day

A hospital lab serves the emergency room, intensive care and wards around the clock. The plan ensures that at every moment an instrument is running, or another lab is receiving samples.

Phases

  • Phase 1: archive, stock and office equipment.
  • Phase 2: one analyser from each pair, tested and approved.
  • Phase 3: the second analyser, at night or at the weekend.
  • Phase 4: fridges and freezers with samples, in a cold chain.

What to coordinate

  • Manufacturer technicians for each analyser.
  • IT: connecting instruments at the new site.
  • Quality: checks and controls before returning to service.
  • Management and wards: where samples go during the move.
