In short
A heavy safe is moved after three checks: its weight, the route (stairs, elevator, openings) and the floor load at the destination. When the elevator cannot take the weight or the stairs are narrow, the safe is lifted by crane through a window or balcony.
Three checks first
- The safe's weight, from the manufacturer or a professional estimate.
- The route: stairs, elevator, turns and openings.
- The destination floor: can it take a concentrated load?
Stairs, elevator or crane
Medium safes go down stairs with dedicated equipment, lighter ones by elevator if the load allows. Very heavy safes, or buildings with narrow access, call for a crane through a window or balcony. Crane work needs parking next to the building and sometimes coordination with the local authority.
Moving day
- Open and empty the safe in advance.
- Protect floors and stairs.
- Secure the safe at its destination.
