In short
Before moving a server room, back everything up, document every connection, set the shut-down and start-up order, and make sure the new room is ready: power, cooling and connectivity. On moving day each server is packed anti-static and labelled by rack and unit.
Two weeks before
- Full backup, and a test that it restores.
- Document and photograph every rack and connection.
- Label every server and cable by rack and unit.
- Check the new room: power, UPS, cooling and connectivity.
Moving day
- Shut down in the order set by IT.
- Remove servers from racks and pack them anti-static.
- Move empty racks and place them per plan.
- Reinstall servers in the same units.
After
- Power up in order and check services.
- Check alerts and logs.
- Update documentation for the new location.
